The upcoming African, American and Oceanian Arts sale by @binocheetgiquello takes place live online this Friday, November 6th! To participate in this sale, for which Mr Bernard Dulon is the African and Oceanian Art expert, bids will be taken online on Drouot Digital. You can register now, or send an e-mail to info@betg.fr.
Presented in this sale is this exceptionally beautiful ibeji figure. According to the Yoruba, twins are almost supernatural beings. If one of them dies, a special cult is offered to them through the intermediary of sculptures such as this one, called ibeji. Ibeji means “born twice”.
This exemplar is particularly classic in its design, its muscles and limbs superbly cut out. The patina is beautiful and shows that it was used for a long time in rituals. The traits of the face have been erased, washed and rubbed many times, but remains a beaked mouth characteristic of the Igbomina People’s style.

We are taking part in @tefaf online, from November 1 through November 4, 2020, with exclusive Early Access days on October 30 and October 31,2020!
For this exclusive digital version of the art fair, we are presenting this very rare ceremonial Dogon Cup, representing the mythical ark which descended from heaven to reorganize and populate the world. This work with its very esoteric aesthetic quality, extends in the head and tail of the harnessed horse that drew it upon its arrival on earth. Its flanks are decorated with representations of prime ancestors, or mommo, framing the totemic crocodile.
Such pieces are very rare because there was only one for each sanctuary which only appeared upon very particular occasions. They were used once a year for the winter solstice, every third year for the young men circumcision ceremonies, upon the declaration of a war and for the foundation of a village. It then received the meat of the sacrifices which was shared between the notables during a highly ceremonial meal.
